Colorado

In contrast to the rough-and-tumble mining towns in the state’s early history, Colorado Springs was first envisioned as a genteel resort community. The region’s dry, pleasant climate and impressive natural surroundings (including thermal waters in adjacent Manitou Springs) drew people to the area for rest, relaxation and recuperation from illness. The ritzy reputation never really took hold, but over 130 years later, the city remains true to its beginnings – its more than six million annual visitors make tourism the metropolis’s third-largest industry.

With the expansive Midwestern plains to the east and the majestic Rocky Mountains to the west, Denver feels like the center of the country. In fact, it nearly is. Denver International Airport, the sixth busiest in the world, is only 340 miles from the midpoint of the continental United States. This capital city has long been a popular stopping point for cross-country travelers or winter vacationers on their way to the state’s celebrated ski slopes. But in recent years, Denver has begun to make a year-round name for itself — for tourists and permanent residents alike.

California

The city of Anaheim, some 30 miles from Los Angeles in Orange County, is one of Southern California’s top tourist draws. One of the main reasons, of course, is Disneyland. Thirty-eight million visitors a year from all over the globe flock to Anaheim to enjoy a host of attractions, the biggest of which are Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm (which is technically located in adjoining Buena Park). Anaheim also has one of the largest convention centers in the state, theaters, championship golf courses and pro-sports arenas.

There’s a cliché that Los Angeles is a group of suburbs in search of a city. To suggest that LA has no heart is untrue. While the city does sprawl and has lots of diverse communities within its boundaries, each of those districts has a heart and soul of its own. As does the city’s main attraction, Disneyland. The beach towns — casual and relaxed — have the widest appeal, attracting everyone from families to "hipsters." Santa Monica, Venice and Marina del Rey

With the nickname it adopted three decades ago – “America’s Finest City” – San Diego, California makes a rather bold and immodest claim. Previously perceived as a sleepy, sunny seaside town, San Diego now ranks as America’s 6th largest city, but can it also be considered “America’s finest”? For both business and vacation travelers, you’ll see evidence to support that proud designation, even before your plane touches down at San Diego’s Lindbergh Field.

Less official than New York’s borough delineations, San Francisco is composed of a patchwork of neighborhoods, each with its own unique flavor, feel, shops and vibe. San Franciscans are opposed to the widespread appearance of chain stores or large mall complexes (save for the ultra-tourist suction cup of Union Square), thus every neighborhood is a unique composition of its own green grocers, independently owned hardware stores, cafes and restaurants and local businesses.

It began as outpost in 1814 and became the capital of Arkansas in 1836. Little Rock, the capital city of Arkansas, is located near the center of the state at the junction of Interstate Highways 30 & 40, and on the south bank of the Arkansas River. Also located near the geographical center of the United States, Little Rock is in the center of what is commonly referred to as the Sunbelt.
